The Absurd Theatre
The
absurd theatre was born in the Second World War, where the people needs an aid
to avoid the situation of a destroyed world, so a group of writers started to
write about this. The group was composed of Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco,
Jean Genet and Harold Pinter, where through their work they tried to express
the feelings in the god universe where the human existence don’t have
signification if there aren’t communication. Their work is considered as a
reaction in front of the traditional concepts of the occidental theatre. Their
influence in the posterior dramaturgy, overcoat in those that had followed what
they had done in the tradition of the absurd, was also notable as their prose
impact.
The construction and the argument was logic so they show the irrationality and the illogical of the discourse.
The
Absurd theatre have the last conclusion in the work of Beckett titled
“Breathing”(1970) that consist only in the silence.
One
of the principal preoccupation of the absurd theatre is to show the occult
reality that is under the idea of felicity and comfort that kind of live of the
society burgess. Each play create their own implacable models of intern logic,
sometimes sad(as the play of Beckett “Waiting for Godot”, 1952) pathetic ( also
in Beckett “Endgame”, 1957) agonising ( in the play of Ionesco “The Lesson”,
1950), and also infinite kinds. All of them have in commune the presentation of
one grotesque reality.(1) The questionnaire of the referents, alienated inside
and outside of the scenery, affect to three of the fundamental areas: the
character( that can change the sex, personality or status), the plot (that
sometimes is circular, doesn’t go to anywhere and repulse any aesthetic
resolution) and the objects ( that can proliferate until the expulsion of one
character, as in the play of Ionesco).
The
Absurd theatre is referring to the drama literature that has appeared in the
country of the 40th and beginnings of the 50th.
Their
roots come from the plays of the “allegoric morality” of the Middle Age and in
the sacramental autos ( allegoric religious drama) of the Spanish baroque, in
the literature of no-sense from authors like Lewis Carrol, Strindberg, James
Joyce and Franz Kafka, in the grotesque drama of Alfred Jarry. Beckett is related
with the Absurd theatre because the tragedy and the comedy crash in one sad
illustration of the human condition and the absurdity of the existence. The
Absurd dramatic it’s an investigator who the order, freedom, justice,
psychology and the language there are only approximations to an ambiguity and
disappointing reality. The Absurd drama also is characteristic is that their
characters want to express and they can’t get it. The initial situation is that
the kind of they are situated in the scenery is optima to express their
sentiments and there is based in the visual representation. The objects,
accessories and the decoration only acquired an extraordinary importance.
In
one hand there are few writers that want the name of absurd, reality the only
authors that we considerate authentic representative of the absurd theatre are
those that their plays motive the denomination.(2)
The
Absurd theatre does a social critic, it want to put in question a meanness
society. This is the most easy accessible message and wherefore the most known
of the Absurd theatre, but is not of course the most essential or meaningful.
As
in the Greek old tragedy, the Absurd theatre is an intent to do the public more
conscious of the precarious and mysterious situation of the man in the
universe. The Absurd theatre express precisely the absent of the accepts values
of cosmic systems, the Absurd theatre is in the middle of the comic and tragic
and also combines the laugh and horror.
It
expose the dream of the modern man to match in the world that he live. Try to
expose he the human condition as really is, to released him of his illusions,
that have condennate him to the nonconformity and the disappointment.
Then
the man dignity consisted in his ability of front the reality, accept without
panic, illusions and to laugh of it.
