Peter Howard’s
A Poppy was first published in The Interpreter's House in 1997. It
is a very original poem because it is an interpretation of war through
the world of flowers. The role of the reader is crucial, as he needs to
know the features and the symbology of each single flower to get
the meaning of the poem. All this is related to the feelings and actions
of people in the war period.
The author
conceived the poem in two different versions. On the one hand we find the
poem in a “normal” format, while on the other we find an animated version
of the poem that from my point of view is very useful for a proper interpretation,
as it involves colours and a format that complement every single action
of the poem. This resource has not only been applied to A Poppy, but we
also can find these animated versions in other Peter Howard’s poems like
Normal Now,
The Rainbow
Factory,
Like
Smoke,
A
Valentine,
Scary
Birds, etc. I think that new technology together with these animated
poems form a very attractive combination that implies additional meaning
that would not be present in the “plain” version of the poem.
To conclude
I will say that I have discovered the close relationship that is possible
between literature and new technologies. The subject “Hypertexts” in the
Universitat de Valencia has given me the
opportunity to read literature using my computer. The figure of Peter Howard
is specially related to this medium so it has been easier for me to read
his works from the internet. Form this perspective we can see how internet
is a great way to enrich, enjoy and study literature.
