CHARACTERS

 

   Joan: she is a girl at the beginning of the play and in the end she is a woman. The play explains her life. Joan is very brave and she does all to survive.

   Harper: she is Joan`s aunt. This woman is very strange, sometimes she is friendly and kind and in other times she is very rude and mysterious.

   Todd: Firstly he is a mate of Joan’s work, after they are in love.

 

PLOT

 

   At the beginning of the play Joan is living with her aunt and her uncle, “because she lost her parents”(I think). In the evening she hears noises and she realises that her uncle was hitting people; her aunt explains her that her uncle helps people because they are in war and her was hitting because these people are bad.

 

   At the second act Joan is a woman who works in hats, and I think that these hats are to the soldiers’ war because in this time there is a time of war. Joan works with Todd and they are in love.

 

   At the end of the play Joan is walking in a war place for meeting with Todd, he is in Harper’s house. Joan has a mission  but we do not know what it is but she crosses this war place for love.

 

CRITIC

 

   I do not understand what this play wants to explain us, but what I actually now is that this play represents a war for all life. Human life is in war and also animal life is in war.

   This play does not represent the same that in others plays of Caryl Churchill. She always is writing plays with issues like politics or feminism, but this play only talks about the war, and the life of a woman in a period of time.
