BRAVE NEW WORLD' S SUMMARY
Brave New World starts situating us in a future time and society. In this society it is controlled who is going to "be born", how someone is going to be, to which social class he or she is going to belong, what is going to like to that person, which one will be his or her profession, how much intelligence he or she will have, etc.
To get it, people are conditioned. There are no parents. Embroils grow in bottles and since that moment it is already determined to which social class they will belong. All that is what the Director of World Hatcheries of a Conditioning Centre in London explain to the students.
In this civilisation it does not exist long and strong relations between people. Everybody belongs to everybody. For having fun people go to a kind of cinema that allows people to feel the same as actors in the movie or they take soma, a drug to have holidays from reality. God has been substituted by Ford.
But Bernard Marx feels different. Someone made a mistake when he was still in his bottle and that affected his body. His size was much shorter than the size of the other people of his class. His friend, Helmholtz Watson, was also conscious of his individuality due to his high degree of intelligence. He writes propaganda for the government, but he feels able to write something really important and moving.
Bernard decides going to a Savage Reserve in New Mexico and he invites Lenina. Before going he goes to ask for permission to the Director of the Centre. The Director tells him that he also went to that Reserve some years ago. He went there with a girl called Linda. But one day Linda went for a walk and she disappeared. He could not find her.
Bernard and Lenina go to the Savage Reserve. There they meet indians and they find Linda and John. John is the Director and Linda' s son. He has not been conditioned. He has grown knowing his mother, believing on God, believing on truth love, reading Shakespeare... However, he has also heard about civilisation. His mother has told him many things about it and he thinks about it as a "Brave New World". John falls in love with Lenina, but later he is disappointed, when he discovers that she "belongs to everybody".
Bernard, Lenina, Linda and John go to London. Bernard takes Linda and John in front of the Director, who is horrified and ashamed when he sees the old and fat Linda and his son. Since that moment he renounces to his place as Director.
It is only possible to see John or "the Savage" talking with Bernard so the later becomes very famous. Fame makes him change and he gets a lot of false friends. John and Helmholtz become good friends.
However nobody is interested on Linda so she spend all the time eating soma until she enters in coma and she dies in the hospital. Linda' s death affects John and he starts to throw away soma by a window. Helmholtz and Bernard come. Helmholtz helps John, while Bernard, horrified, is not very sure about what to do. The police come and they are taken to Mustapha Mond.
Mustapha Mond decides to send Bernard and Helmholtz to an island where they will live with other people like them, people who feel their individuality and freedom. But he wants John to stay there to continue experimenting with him.
John only wants to stay alone and he decides to run away from that civilisation. He moves to an abandoned lighthouse. There he plans to live in a self-sufficient way and to "purify" himself from the new civilisation. But he is soon discovered by people and he is hounded by more and more reporters and onlookers who come in helicopters. Finally he commits suicide.
