Poem for Marie
Love, I shall perfect for you the child
Who diligently potters in my brain
Digging with heavy spade till sods were piled
Or puddling through muck in a deep drain.

Yearly I would sow my yard-long garden.
I'd strip a layer of sods to build the wall
That was to keep out sow and pecking hen.
Yearly, admitting these, the sods would fall.

Or in the sucking clabber I would splash
Delightedly and dam the flowing drain
But always my bastions of clay and mush
Would burst before the rising autumn rain.

Love, you shall perfect for me this child
Whose small imperfect limits would keep breaking:
Within new limits now, arrange the world
And square the circle: four walls and a ring.

Poema para Marie
Amor, te perfeccionaré el niño
que deambula diligente en mi cabeza
apilando el césped con amplia pala
entretenido con la mugre tras la tormenta

Cada año sembraba mi amplio jardín.
Con capas de césped construía el muro
para alejarlo del picotazo de gallina.
Por eso, cada año el césped del muro caía.

O chapotearía en la reciente masa
feliz y taponando el flujo del desagüe
pero siempre mis bastiones de arcilla
reventarían ante la densa lluvia otoñal.

Amor, me perfeccionarás el niño
cuyos pequeños límites seguirían cayendo:
y con nuevos límites, arregla el mundo
y cuadra el círculo: cuatro paredes y un anillo.

(2) Brain : prefiero traducirla por cabeza.
(3) Sods : césped, cubrir de césped http://www.m-w.com/spanish/sod Esto me hará además prescindir de digging pues no me suena bien cavando el césped.
(4) Heavy spade : utilizo “amplia pala” que me suena mejor “gran pala”
(5) Puddling through muck : entretenido con la mugre http://www.wordreference.com/definition/puddling en el punto 5 habla de mess around as in liquid or paste.
(6) Sow : como sustantivo puede ser “cerda” o bien podemos cambiar de categoría gramatical el verbo y llamarlo siembra. No me queda claro y por ello lo dejo en el aire prescindiendo de su traducción y dejando “para alejarlo del picotazo de la gallina” y dejando como antecedente el jardín sembrado.

(8) clabber : raw milk that has soured and thickened http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=clabber Parece ser que es lo que se produce cuando la leche se espesa o se condensa. Elijo masa que aunque es ambiguo creo que encaja con el poema ya que si leemos más adelante parece que el agua se mezcla con otros elementos creando una “masa” que obstruye el desagüe.
(9) Dam : embalsar http://www.wordreference.com/es/translation.asp?tranword=dam Se embalsa en el desagüe que fluye, luego, tapona el flujo del desagüe.
(10) Breaking : más que romper, creo que encaja mejor cayendo.

Digging
Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; snug as a gun.

Under my window, a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:
My father, digging. I look down

Till his straining rump among the flowerbeds
Bends low, comes up twenty years away
Stooping in rhythm through potato drills
Where he was digging.

The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft
Against the inside knee was levered firmly.
He rooted out tall tops, buried the bright edge deep
To scatter new potatoes that we picked,
Loving their cool hardness in our hands.

By God, the old man could handle a spade.
Just like his old man.

My grandfather cut more turf in a day
Than any other man on Toner's bog.
Once I carried him milk in a bottle
Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up
To drink it, then fell to right away
Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods
Over his shoulder, going down and down
For the good turf. Digging.

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I've no spade to follow men like them.

Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I'll dig with it.

Cavando
Entre mis dedos índice y pulgar
la rechoncha pluma espera, como pistola cargada.

Bajo mi ventana, un limpio sonido carraspea
cuando la azada se hunde en el suelo de grava
es mi padre quien cava. Miró hacia abajo

hasta que su tenso cuerpo se inclina entre setos
se agacha a veinte años de distancia
inclinándose al ritmo de las sembradoras
donde estaba cavando.

La áspera bota reposando en el asa, el mango
apoyado firmemente contra la rodilla interior
arrancó altos tallos, hundiendo profundamente el borde brillante
para esparcir nuevas patatas que nosotros recogíamos
amando su fría dureza en nuestras manos.

Por Dios, el viejo hombre podía manejar la azada.
Como lo hacía su viejo.

Mi abuelo cortaba más césped en un día
que cualquier otro hombre del pantano de Toner.
Una vez le llevé una botella de leche
que tenía por corcho un papel desaliñado. Se enderezó
para beber, e inmediatamente se volvió a inclinar
cortando en limpias tajadas, lanzando terrones
por encima de sus hombros, yendo más y más abajo
en busca de tierra buena. Cavando.

El frío olor del moho de patata, la bofetada y el chapoteo
de la turba empapada, los cortes secos de un borde
a través de vivas raíces despiertas en mi cabeza
pero no tengo azada para seguir a hombres como ellos.

Entre mis dedos índice y pulgar,
la rechoncha pluma ensaya.
Cavaré con ella.

A Call
'Hold on,' she said, 'I'll just run out and get him.
The weather here's so good, he rock the chance
To do a bit of weeding.'

So I saw him
Down on his hands and knees beside the leek rig,
Touching, inspecting, separating one
Stalk from the other, gently pulling up
Everything not tapered, frail and leafless,
Pleased to feel each little weed-root break,
But rueful also...

Then found myself listening to
The amplified grave ticking of hall clocks
Where the phone lay unattended in a calm
Of mirror glass and sunstruck pendulums...
And found myself then thinking: if it were nowadays,
This is how Death would summon Everyman.
Next thing he spoke and I nearly said I loved him.

Una llamada
“Espera,” dijo ella, “sólo saldré a buscarlo.
El tiempo es tan bueno aquí que aprovecha
para escardar un poco.”

Así que lo vi

Apoyado sobre sus manos y sus rodillas junto a los puerros,
tocando, inspeccionando, separando
un tallo del otro, estirando con suavidad
todo lo que no sea estrecho, frágil y sin hojas,
encantado de sentir romperse cada raíz de mala hierba
pero también arrepentido…

Entonces me encontré escuchando
el grave tic amplificado de los relojes de la entrada
donde el teléfono permanecía desatendido en una calma
de espejo de cristal y péndulos golpeados por el sol…

Y entonces me encontré pensando: si fuera ahora,
así es como la muerte citaría a cualquier hombre.
Después él habló y yo casi dije que le amaba.

A Dream of Jealousy
Walking with you and another lady
In wooded parkland, the whispering grass
Ran its fingers through our guessing silence
And the trees opened into a shady

I think the candour of the light dismayed us.
We talked about desire and being jealous,
Our conversation a loose single gown
Or a white picnic tablecloth spread out
Like a book of manners in the wilderness.
'Show me,' I said to our companion, 'what
I have much coveted, your breast's mauve star.'
And she consented. Oh neither these verses
Nor my prudence, love, can heal your wounded stare.

Un sueño de celos
Caminando contigo y con otra dama
por un frondoso parque, la susurrante hierba
corría sus dedos a través de nuestro enigmático silencio
y los árboles se abrieron en un nebuloso
claro inesperado donde nos sentamos.
Creo que el candor de la luz nos consternó.
Hablamos sobre el deseo y los celos,
nuestra conversación una simple bata suelta
o un blanco mantel de picnic extendido
como un libro de modales en tierra salvaje.
“Enséñame,” le dije a nuestra acompañante, “lo que
tanto he codiciado, la estrella malva de tu pecho.”
Y ella consintió. ¡Oh! ni estos versos
ni mi prudencia, amor, pueden curar tu mirada herida.
