CHARACTERS

We could distinguish between main and secondary characters. Within the main characters, we can mention:

• Lord Nikolich of Rudna: he was a lord of the ‘Golden Fleece’, director of the Serbian schools in Osek, court judge in Torontal and bishop in Srem.
• Attilia: daughter of lord Nikolich of Rudna, being fifteen. She plays an important role in this story because she appears in most of the events that take place in the story.
• John the Damascene and John the Ladder: they are the people in charge of building the church and the palace. Damascene was well-known as ‘heart builder’ and John the Ladder, as the one who builds ladders towards the sky.

These are the four characters who are given more importance in this hypertext. But Attilia and Damascene are particularly important because they appear in several chapters. The main actions are developed around them.

Among the secondary characters, we can focus on Lieutenant Alexander (Attilia’s boyfriend), but also we find Yagoda, the faithful servant of lord Nikolich. Apart from these characters, we can find others less important, as the Turkish ferryman and Shuvanovski.
