Chronology of Important Dates

 

25 June 1903  - Born in Motihari, Bengal, son of a civil servant in Indian Civil Service.

 

1907-21  - Schooling in England. Anglican convent school, St. Cyprians prep. School, Eton College.

 

1922  - Joins Indian Imperial police in Burma. Serves until resignation in 1927.

 

1928-29  - Lives mainly in Paris, publishes articles and translations.

 

1930-32  Lives mainly in England. Occasional teaching and tutoring.

 

1933  - Publishes “Down and Out in Paris and London”.

 

1934  - Pulishes “Burmese Days” in New York, having failed to find an English publisher.

 

1935  - Publishes a “A Clergyman’s Daughter.”

 

1936  - Publishes “Keep the Aspidisra Flying”. Travels in the North of England. Marries Eileen O’Shaughnessy 9 June. Leaves for Spain and enlists in the P.O U.M militia in December.

 

1937   - Fighting in Spain. Wounded 20 May.  Leaves Spain 23 June. Pulishes “Road to Wigan Pier.”

 

1938   - Publishes “Homage to Catalonia”. Tubercular illness. Visits Morocco for health.

 

1939    - Publishes “Coming Up for Air”.

 

1940    - Publishes “Inside the Whale”. Medically unfit for military service, joins Home Guard.

 

1941    - Joins B.B.C in Indian section of overseas service.

 

1942-43  - Resigns from Home Guard and B.B.C: Becomes literary editor of Tribune. Begins writing “Animal Farm.”

 

1945  - European crrespondent for Observer. His wife dies during operation 29 March. “Animal Farm” pblished in August. Begins writing “1984”.

 

1946  - Rents house in Jura.

 

1947    - Suffers attacks of tuberculosis.

 

1948  - In hospital. Marries Sonia Brownwell 13 October. “1984” published in June.

 

21 January1950  - Dies of pulmonary tuberculosis.
