1882 Born on February 2 in Dublin, Ireland.
1888-98 Studies at Jesuit schools in preparation for university.
1898-1902 Attends University College, Dublin, another Jesuit school, and graduates with a degree in modern languages.
1902 Studies medicine in Paris but soon abandons it for writing.
1903 Returns to Ireland to be at his mother’s deathbed in Dublin.
1904 Meets Nora Barnacle, with whom he will have two children and live his entire life.
1905 Moves to the Continent to teach at the Berlitz school in Trieste and write.
1907 After working in a bank for a year in Rome, he returns to Trieste; publishes Chamber Music, a volume of poems.
1912 Makes his final visit to Ireland.
1914 Publishes Dubliners after eight years of censorship battles.
1916 Publishes A Potrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
1917 Has the first of a series of debilitating eye operations.
1918 Publishes Exiles, a play.
1920 Settles in Paris with his family.
1922 Publishes Ulysses amid controversy concerning its alleged obscenity.
1927 Publishes Pomes Penyeach.
1931 Marries Nora Barnacle.
1934 Publishes Collected Poems.
1939 Publishes Finnegan’s Wake.
1940 After the German occupation of Paris, the Joyces move to Zurich.
1941 Dies of a perforated ulcer on January 13 at Zurich.
