Definitions of some of the concepts we are working in class

Layperson:  noun  A person who does not have expert knowledge of a particular subject.

Shibboleth:  noun  A custom, word, etc. That distinguishes one group of people from another.

Synchronic:  adj.  Relating to a language as it is at a particular point in time.

Diachronic:  adj. Relating to the way a language has developed over time.

Drudge  A person who does all the monotonous work.

Coxcomb  A superficial dandy.

Bury the hutched  Make peace.

Forked tongue noun  Intent to mislead or deceive- Usually used in the phrase to speak with forked tongue.
