PartyTime
Author: Harold Pinter
Title: “Party Time”
Editorial: Faber and Faber
Year and place of publication: 31 October 1991
Dramatis Personae:
-Characters are nine in total Melissa (a woman of seventy), Douglas (a man of fifty), Gavin (a man of fifty), Terry (a man of forty), Fred (a man in his forties), Charlotte (a woman in her thirties), Liz (a woman in her thirties) Dusty (a woman in her twenties) and Jimmy (a young man, Dusty’s brother). Anyone outstand, only Jimmy who is different than others, they are superficial, want look more important than rest of the world, they only talk about things without importance. Every people except Jimmy, who appears at the end, saying things more interesting than the rest.
Plot:
A group of friends or well-known are in a party in Gavin’s flat, enjoying this meeting. Speaking about relations, their holidays places, music…A typical and stupid party done by rich.
They are trying escape from world where outside. Only one thing or best said one character link them with the exterior, Jimmy a character who in the party they don not know what has passed. While every people ask for him, specially his sister Dusty. For anything reason Terry do not want neither heard his name.
Space and time:
Play happens in one place, party in Gavin’s flat with a little decoration, simple and closed. The time used is the present., only is needed night party for this play.
Recourse:
Pinter uses silence in a magisterial way, a colloquial language with short phrases in the main, dark places or little illuminated. With big metaphors at the end without a clear end.
Jimmy is other way for complete his play, a different character, we can think about him is dead, because only he is with them when is not related with exterior. Already he is in their party.
Opinion:
It’s the reflex of many people nowadays, people do not want to know nothing about exterior about more problems besides ours. Isolation again is theme by Pinter, persons have fear because are happen many things outside, and anything is good, violence, chaos, rebellion…
