Since 1999,Mr. Routson, a 34-year-old video artist who lives in
Baltimore, has been going to Baltimore area-movie theaters and
has been recording what happens there with a small camcorder and
then showing the distorted results which he calls
"recordings" as DVD installations in art galleries. This man is
obviously breaking the law of the copyright. which is what the whole
article in the NYT is about. Now,concerning my work,I couldn't possibly
be accused of breaking the law of the copyright because the objective
of my wepage is to give my own opinion and at the same time a different
opinion on Ruth Nestvold's hypertext called "Cutting Edges". The
Copyright Act of 1976 protects "original works of authorship fixed in
any tangible medium of expression.". Hypertext s could then be
considered a non-tangible medium of expression. From what I read about
Ruth Nestvold, she never had problems with people wanting to take
advantage of her work, others than herself.
Copyright and copyright law is important because it permits an author
to automatically claim copyright ownership and protection for an
"original" work. When a book is published, the publisher expects the
copyright law to protect its creative expression for the length of time
provided for by the Copyright Act. Breaking the copyright law is
considered a crime for people who are infringing the intellectual
property rights of others and will be punished according to the
law in the respective state.
