WAITING FOR GODOT

Author: Samuel Beckett

Title: Waiting for Godot

Publishing house: Faber and faber

Publicashed: It was written in French in 1948 and then it was written in English

Place: London

Characters:

Vladimir: He is about sixty years old, he is Estragon´s friend. He wants to wait for

Godot. He is more intelligent than Estragon.

Estragon: He is about sixty years old, he is Vladimir’s friend. He does not want to wait

for Godot, however, he and Vladimir wait for Godot. Estragon is worried.

Lucky: he is Pozzo’s slave; he speaks for a short time.

Pozzo: He is an important character. He is a dominant person. He does not treat lucky

well.

Boy: We do not know his name. He always appears to say to Estragon and Vladimir that

Godot will come the next day, but Godot never appears.

Plot:

Estragon and Vladimir are in an open ground, near a tree. They are waiting for Godot.

However, Estragon and Vladimir do not know Godot, they do not know if Godot exists or

not, if Godot is a person or an animal. Vladimir and Estragon do not know why they have

to meet Godot. When the time passes, Estragon and Vladimir get bored because they

speak about absurd things. Then, Pozzo and Lucky appear, Lucky speaks for a short time

but when he speaks only talks nonsense. Finally, a boy appears to say to Estragon and

Vladimir, that Godot will come the next day, but it is not true.

Setting:

The play occurs around a tree, it is situated in an open ground, for this reason it is rural

and an open place. We can say that place is simple because there is only a tree.

Time:

The first act develops the first day in the afternoon and the second act develops the

second day in the morning, the following day.

Literary devices: Style

This play is written in prose, the author uses a colloquial language. This play is easy to

read and to understand. There are a lot of short sentences.

Personal Opinion:

In my opinion this play is a little absurd, because there are a lot of things which have not

sense, for example: why are they waiting for Godot? Who is Godot? When the play

finishes we do not know what happened to the main characters. From my point of view,

Beckett interprets us about the sense that life has.
