SECOND PAPER

Subject : # 14217 Poesía Inglesa Siglos XIX y XX Grupo A

Student´s name : Vidal Sales, Cristina

Title of the paper : Theological assumptions in William Blake and Gerard Manley Hopkins: Rebellion or Submission?

Author or topic : William Blake and Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Abstract : This paper is intended to present a study of William Blake and G. M. Hopkins’ poetry through the point of view of their religious beliefs. First of all an historical introduction has been done for both of the poets. Dealing with William Blake’s context, The French Revolution, the most striking event of the end of the 18th century, is presented as the source of a religious destabilization. And in relation to G. M. Hopkins, the Victorian Era is illustrated as a moment of religious doubt substantially caused by the improvements in science that took place. The different reactions of Blake and Hopkins towards each moment of religious controversy are explained and then exemplified with the analysis, first, of Blake’s poem “The Divine Image” and, secondly, Hopkins’ poem “God’s Grandeur” . Finally, the religious implications extracted from the reading of these two poems, together with some further investigation, are put in contrast, trying to justify Blake’s radicalism and Hopkins’ conservatism.

Auto-evaluation: I’ve worked really hard in the elaboration of both papers and I am satisfied with the result and the knowledge I’ve obtained, so I think it would be fair to pass this subject. The evaluation of the quality of the papers will decide which mark I get.
