Merida, from the Latin Emerita, is the capital of the autonomous community of Extremadura. Due to the archaeological site of Mérida and because of its important historical and monumental assets, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was founded by the Emperor Octavian Augustus as a retreat for his veteran soldiers.
