n my opinion this novel is intriguing because of its
structure, which is a little bit strange because of his “topological form”, as Michael Joyce says in his comment about the novel. And it is also
complicate, if you want to discover all the stories which are inside it,
because there are many clicking on each word. I think that it is a good novel
in general because you can amuse yourself within it with the story you create,
because there is a multiple choice in the contain of
‘Reach’. Michael Joyce
has
demonstrated his novel ‘Reach’ is not boring at all.
The advantage of hypertext is that you can go through
out all the novel wherever you want choosing your own path and creating your
own story in a non-linear or non-sequential way with the information that the
author (in this case Michael Joyce) has provided for you and for the readers in
general.
This novel of
Michael Joyce is also a bit confusing exactly because of his
multiple paths that you can follow and because of the intention that
people have to read the whole work. But sometimes you can not because you do
not know where is the end, you do not know which is its extension or expansion,
or you have doubts about where click to create your own path within this
enormous choice, etc.
I have had this result perhaps because this is the
first hypertext fiction that I have ever read in my life and it is a different
manner of reading a novel, different from the linear traditional book reading,
and because of this for me was a bit complicate. But this would not be the
last, I am sure. Hypertexts are diverse, have a diverse structure, and
therefore they are unique. Hypertext fiction is very useful, in my opinion, to
the imagination of his readers, to the creation of their new story.
I think that
Michael Joyce is an excellent writer both of published work and also of
hypertext fictions and non-fictions. I have not read any of his other
hypertexts yet, but I really like his hypertext fiction novel ‘Reach’ because it very interesting and
entertaining despite it is not very famous, and I am sure that I will read them
as soon as I can.
So, I recommend you to read ‘Reach’ and enjoy it because it is very funny and amusing
trying to find every time a different story within it. I hope you feel it in
the same way as I feel it!
