BIBLIOGRAPHY 3
Introduction (by Ted Doyle)
Below is a list of books published
by Herbert George (H. G.) Wells. The list is believed to be complete, if not
almost complete. While every book written by H. G. Wells, that Geoff is aware
of, is listed some books may have been omitted. If you know of such an
omission, please contact Geoff or myself at the email addresses below.
Over the years many of the
books have had several editions and often two or more individual books have
been combined in one volume. Listing all of the editions (often under entirely
different title names) and the compilations would be beyond the scope of a
reasonable undertaking and of limited added benefit. Therefore the only the
years of the first publication of each book have been listed.

Introduction (by Geoff Doyle) While searching for H.G.'s book titles I came
across several papers/pamphlets that he published as well. There are dozens
of them and the few that I included are not intended to neglect the existence
of the others - more will be included later. At times it was also not clear
as to whether some works qualify as books in their own right, some may only
be short stories or pamphlets. Also, a point should be made about the
numerous collections of short stories published under many different titles -
there are too many to list, but the principle early ones are included. Perhaps the only
equal of H.G.'s great literary skill was his enormous literary output, which
was prodigious indeed. A very conservative estimate is that he wrote some
30,000 pages of printed text published in book form over his working
lifetime. This means that Wells' average output was (at minimum) about one
and one-half pages per day, seven days a week for 55 years. Put another way,
If one had access to all Wells' books and decided to read all of them in one
year, it would mean going through 82 pages every day. So, not only does the
Wells enthusiast have the pleasure of always finding something new by H.G. to
read, but there can always be a full lifetime of rewarding re-reading as
well. |
