INTRODUCTION

 

The University of Valencia has nowadays a system of video conference of group, of the manufacturer PictureTel, formed by five units of video conference of room H.320 that have the possibility of connection multipoint centralized across a MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) by means of ISDN. Due to the characteristics of these units, its utilization only is possible from special rooms, in which they are located, thing that limits greatly its utilization on the part of the users, since they have to move physically to each of these rooms whenever they want to realize a video conference. The above mentioned units are installed in Burjassot's campus, campus of Naranjos, Blasco Ibáñez's campus, library of the Street of the Nave and in Senda de Senent street building. The MCU, also of the manufacturer PictureTel, is installed in Blasco Ibáñez's campus.

The principal aim of this project will be to study the viability of establishing a gateway H.320-H.323 that provides bidirectional communications in real time among the terminals H.320 in the ISDN and other terminals H.323 in the net IP of the university. Of this form, to the users of the university it will be been allowed to report for video conference from any computer of the local net of the university, of transparent form, with a user of these special rooms or with any user who should have an unit of video conference ISDN. This will do that this technology is accessible to a users' wider variety. The basic scheme of the project is the one that appears later:

Additional, the project will study the possibilities of optimization and improvements of the current service that offer these units and the possibility of realizing the audio-visual diffusion of events by means of its integration with systems multicast, as MBone.

It's not assigned specific budget for the execution of this project. The units of video conference ISDN are already operative in the University of Valencia though its use is very limited. The service of computer science has some cameras and computers that can be used as platform of video IP H.323. For the gateway H.320-H.323 there will be looked solutions of free distribution, but in case of having to adopt commercial solutions the prooves and opportune tests will be tried to use versions of demo yielded by the different manufacturers to realize.

In case none of the previous alternatives were possible, the project will limit itself carrying out the opportune recommendations fruit of the study in order that they can be executed when the University of Valencia considers it to be pertinent.
