Works




1838 - Le Fanu's formal literary career began when "The Ghost and the Bonesetter" was published in the Dublin University Magazine.

1839 - "A Strange Event in the Life of Schalken the Painter", a subtle and chilling tale, rated by M. R. James as "one of the best of Le Fanu's good things". He touched on themes later developed in his most famous work, "Carmilla".

1845 - The Cock and the Anchor, his first novel.

1847 - The Fortunes of Colonel Torlogh O'Brien, his second novel. These first two novels were in the tradition of Sir Walter Scott.

1851 - "The Evil Guest", published in Ghost Stories and Tales of Mystery.

1853 - "An Account of Some Strange Disturbances in Aungier Street", a story about a house and its ghost. Click here or alternatively here to read it.

1864 - Wylder's Hand.

1864 - Uncle Silas.

1865 - Guy Deverell.

1867 - The Tenants of Malory.

1868 - A Lost Name.

1868 - Haunted lives.

1869 - The Wyvern Mystery.

1871 - Checkmate.

1871 - Chronicles of Golden Friars.

1871 - The Rose and the Key.

1873 - Willing to Die.

1923 - Madam Crowl's Ghost and Other Tales of Mystery, a collection of forgotten tales by Le Fanu edited by M. R. James, who considered that Le Fanu "stands absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories". Click here to read "Squire Toby's Will".
