EL ZOO DE CRISTAL

The representation took place on Sunday, 18th of December, 2005 at the Teatre Principal.
The cast for this play was composed by TOM (Luis Tosar), AMANDA (Cristina Rota), LAURA (María Botto) and JIM (Juan Carlos Vellido).
The story is located on St. Louis, on the 1930’s, on the stage, we see Tom’s house, the sitting-room, where they eat, drink coffee or tea, there is a sofa, a table, and also there is a crystal animal figures collection, a zoo, this is the connection with the tittle.
There is also a terrace, where Tom uses to smoke.
El zoo de Cristal, by Tennessee Williams, narrates the story about a young man, TOM, who lives with his mother and sister, and tries to escape from this life of working for a ridiculous pay in a job without better possibilities, and getting drunk before to return to his house, where will have to stand his mother, a crazy old-fashioned woman, who represents with fidelity the southwest women of the 30’s.
He also lives with his sister, Laura, a young woman who is lame. This fact will affect her life. She is incapable to have a normal life, she can’t face to the real world.
All this facts, will have influence in Tom’s life, he will want to go away, to the army, and leave his family, like his father did.
The play gets a decadent view, the girl is so insecure, the mother is old-fashioned, and he can’t wait more, he is going to leave the house and go out.
Only the apparition of Jim, his partner, gets an opportunity to be happy. Tom is going to help his sister and then, he will go away. Jim comes home to dinner with Tom, and at this moment he will meet Laura.
After dinner, Jim and Laura stay alone, and it seems to be a great opportunity to get Laura married, but their lives are so unhappy, and Jim says her he has a girlfriend and goes out.
I think this fact represents the whole life this family have and always will have, their life always has been unfortunate and only situations like the arrive of Jim maintain the hope to live.
At the end, Tom will go away, he will escape from his torturing life and he’ll be free to look for new possibilities. His mother and sister will continue their poor and sad lives which they will never change.
