Chronology

 

1938

 

Frederick  Forsyth was born in Ashford, Kent, England.

 

1955

 

At age seventeen, Forsyth decided he was ready to start experiencing life for himself, so he left school and traveled to Spain.

 

1956

 

He started work as one of the youngest pilots in the RAF, earning his wings when he was just nineteen years old. He worked here until 1958.

 

1959

 

He worked as a reporter for the Eastern Daily Press in Norfolk.

 

1961

 

He became a correspondant for Reuters, first in Paris, and then in East Germany and Czechoslovakia, locations which provided him with information for his first books.

 

1965

 

Returning to London, he worked as a radio and television reporter for the BBC.

 

1967

 

He covered the Biafran side of the Biafran-Nigeria war from July to September, as assistant diplomatic correspondent. This provided him with knowledge of international politics, and the world of mercenary soldiors.

 

1968

 

He left the BBC to return to Biafra, and he reported on the war, first as a freelance and later for the Dialy Express and Time magazine.

 

1970

 

After nine years of an intense journalist career, he decided to write a book using the research methods he had learnt while a reporter.

 

1971

 

The Day of the Jackal was Frederick Forsyth's first novel. An assassin known as The Jackal is hired to kill Charles De Gaulle. We know he's going to fail, but the story is a great success despite this knowledge.

 

1972

 

He published The Odessa File. A story about the hunt to bring a WW II war criminal to justice.

 

1974

 

Frederick Forsyth published The Dogs of War.

 

1979

 

Is published The Devil’s Alternative. It’s a cold war spy thriller.

 

1980

 

Frederick Forsyth sold his house in County Wicklow, because of kidnap fears and returned to England.

 

1984

 

Frederick Forsyth published The Fourth Protocol. It tells the story of a Russian renegade secret service chief who sends an agent to Britain to assemble and detonate a nuclear bomb near an American base. The expectation is that this will swing the upcoming election in favor of the leftists.

 

1989

 

It is published The Negotiator. It’s the story of a ploy to force the President of the USA to resign, or to otherwise prevent him from signing a treaty that would be unfortunate for the bad guys.

1990

 

Frederick Forsyth had decided to retire, but after ripped-off by dodgy financial advisor, Roger Levitt, he started to write again.

 

1994


It’s published The Fist of God, which is set in the build-up to the first Gulf War, where a British SAS operative is sent to Kuwait and then Baghdad to discover the truth about Saddam Hussein's secret weapon, code-named "The Fist of God".

 

1996

 

Icon’s novel is published. It is set in 1999, at which time Russian politics is in a crisis. A populist Russian politician looks like he will win the upcoming presidential election, but the British secret service has obtained proof that this man will be worse than Hitler was in Germany. The British and the Americans launch a covert operation to derail this man's election campaign.

 

1999

 

Frederick Forsyth published The Phantom of Manhattan.

 

2003

 

Is published The Avenger. It tells about a Vietnam veteran who is hired to avenge the killing of a billionaire's grandson in war-torn ex-Yugoslavia. The story includes flashbacks to the hero being a "Tunnel Rat" in the Vietnam War.

 

2005

 

Frederick Forsyth lent his support to Reg Keys who was standing against Tony Blair in the Prime Minister’s Sedgefield constituency.

 

2006

Frederick Forsyth published The Afghan, which is the story of how the CIA, with the help of the British, attempt to infiltrate the Taliban in Afghanistan and thus foil a new terrorist attack on the West.
