INTRODUCTION
Hi! My name is Marta Campillo Cañete. I’m a student at
the University of Valencia, in Spain. For the
subject of English Narrative I’ve been
asked for doing a analysis of “LIES”, a Hypertext created by Richard L. Pryll Jr.
This concept, “Hypertext”,
has been introduced to me the first time during this course. Although I was
confused at the begining now I
Understand this term. As I know “Hypertext” could be a totally unknown concept
for some of you I’m going to explain a little bit what
Hypertext is about, in a technique way.
Hypertext is a special type of database system, invented by Ted Nelson in the
1960s, in which objects (text, pictures, music, programs, and
so on) can be creatively linked to each other. When you select an
object, you can see all the other objects that are linked to it. You can
move from one object to another even though they might have very
different forms. For example, while reading a document about Mozart,
you might click on the phrase Violin
Concerto in A Major, which
could display the written score or perhaps even invoke a recording of the
concerto. Clicking on the name Mozart might cause various illustrations of
Mozart to appear on the screen. The icons that you select to
view associated objects are called Hypertext links or buttons.
Hypertext systems are particularly useful for organizing and browsing through
large databases that consist of disparate types of information.
There are several Hypertext systems available for Apple Macintosh
computers and PCs that enable you to develop your own databases.Such
systems are often called authoring
systems . HyperCard software
from Apple Computer is the most famous.
To
sum up and to make it easy to understand, I want to say that Hypertext is the
best way for readers to choose their own story making their
decisions,
jumping from one link to another, and to decide how the text they’re
reading must end.
“LIES”
presents a world where lies are present constantly. People use lies to cover
what they really want to say. Read this play is not difficult
, on the contrary, you only have to click here and
began your adventure. You’ll be led to the front page of this Hypertext,
created in 1994. The word “Lies” appears in the
middle of the page and below it other two words: “begin” which
allows you to start reading the play and “about lies”
which leads you to a page created by the author of “Lies” in where he
explains how he wrote the story. Also you can see the available translations in
other languages and different sites where you can read “Lies”.
Now you know a little more about “Lies” and probably you had already read it,
and , of course, if you’re interested in learning more, I invite
you to click in the different links
I’ve put beneath this introduction to see my analysis of “Lies”.
I hope you have a good time and if you have any question let me know.
Greetings!
