STEPS FOLLOWED
First
of all I went to this page and
then I clicked on “ begin”. The story started.
The first quote that appears is the
same for all people who reads “Lies”:
“Lies tell you more about a person
than the truth does. Lies tell you what a person wants to be, rather than what
they are. Lies are dreams,
lies are fantasy. Who wants to live
the truth, when you can live a lie?”

Then the story shows us it is about a
couple and the boy is who narrates the story. They met each other for a whole
year. They live together
in their apartment and the coexistence
is getting difficult because of their continuous lies. Both of them have
journals.

He explains they have codes to avoid
saying “to lie”. They call it “to dance”. To “ enjoy rums and cokes” is to
enjoy telling your lies and
crying
over it. He says that these codes help them to have more trust between them.

Also they have other codes, for
example, “summer lover” which is the word for their journals. They began with
the journals when they started
writting letters to
each other. “Cheating” is used for saying they are writting each other and
“Sleeping with their summer lovers” means to
fantasize about having sex in
their journals. She gave her journal human characteristics.

Her summer lover was Antoine who is
tall and dark, rides a motorcycle and only wears t-shirts and blue jeans. He is
a writer.
His summer lover is Gabriella who is
redhead, younger than him, a very good listener but a not very good speaker.

He says that all this started when he
called on July 25. She was in her room, drinking a few bottles of wine with
some friends, and she told
him she was “dancing”. Now he has
found two letters, one for him and one for Antoine. His letter said all the
things she had been doing
over the summer and Antoine’s
letter explained why she was lying him. She was laughing at him.

She wanted to give creativity to her
lovers. Antoine’s writing had improved a lot and had become more passionate. In
the letter she wrote
to him, she talked about one of her
friends who took a writer to a park. Her friend read poetry to him. She
explained to Antoine that her lies
had been simple but close to the truth.

While the sky is growing light, she
writes: “ Have you ever smelled a sunrise? The best painters can smell a
sunrise, and their sunrises too
smell. It isn’t a yellow and orange
smell like you might imagine, its the smell of life. It is a red smell. Writing it, she fell asleep.

This is the way the story ends: The simple truth is that the two
main characters find that they can be happy together despite the mistakes
they both made over the summer.
They decide to move in together. They argue occasionally.
