Chapter One

Although in the USA the literary movement in the early 20th Century is called Naturalism, in England it is called Modernism. Both lasted a long time, from the late years in the 19th Century until the 20`s and 30`s.

Naturalism is a non native movement, it is European. It began with Zolà’s experimental novel. Naturalism lasted from a long time in the U.S.A, in that period we find the "macrowriters" who revealed the abuses of society. The only limit Naturalism has is the writer himself. That movement shows the disillusionment of the lost generation, this feeling is due to the long period of wars: I World War, Spanish Civil War and II World War. The text is a kind of collage describing the city in war.

There are several American writers who are representative of that movement such as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner and Fitzgerald.
