Jamison
Green was born in
Oakland, California, in 1948. He was adopted at 1 month of age by a couple who
desired a baby girl, and he was given a female first and middle name.
Female-bodied and male gendered, James was incapable of conforming to
prevailing standards for female behavior.
He started refusing to wear dresses before he was two years old, and by the
time he entered public school, he was aware that he was different from other
boys and girls. People often had difficulty determining the sex of the
masculine child wearing a dress, and they would treat him as an object of
ridicule. James credits the unconditional love of his adoptive family for much
of the inner strength that has enabled him to survive and be successful. He was
also fortunate that his family was very stable
and that no one in his immediate or
extended family suffered from such adverse conditions as alcoholism, violence
or abusive behaviors, or any affective psycho-social disorders.
Policy Consulting
Since 1994, Jamison Green has worked with attorneys, legislators, and other
policymakers to craft language pertaining to gender identity and expression in
employment, housing, and public accommodation.
Mr. Green is also a leading academic theorist concerning gender-related
policies and practices as they affect gender-variant people in the realms of
law, medicine, social services, religion, government, and in the workplace.
Mr. Green has conducted policy reviews to ensure internal consistency, and has
developed position papers and explanatory documents that corporations and
governmental bodies have used to educate staff, clients, or customers about
existing Gender Identity and Expression non-discrimination policies and
practices.
For example, Mr. Green worked with Federated Department Stores (Macy's) to
implement their non-discrimination policy. He developed a guide for all Macy's
and Bloomingdales associates and a more detailed document for Human Resources
personnel. The guides were rolled out in April, 2007.
Mr. Green has also collaborated with internal corporate teams to develop
successful specific business-case documents that provide the rationale for
implementing Gender Identity and Expression non-discrimination policies and
practices within their organizations.
