The main difficulty in translating this text was the language,
old and
sophisticated. I now look at the translated text and one would never
guess it
was written in the Victorian Age. I remember that metaphor of
translating as
moving house and how some things get damaged and some others get lost
in the
process… Well, in this case, it is a long journey from Victorian
England to
present-day Spain so quite a few things will be missing. The translated
text
reads like a simple not at all sophisticated children’s story.
Another problem I had was with the inserted fragments of direct
speech
which I still don’t know if I marked correctly. There are quite a few
repetitions in the original text that sound perfectly all right but in
Spanish
not so good. Among the expressions I had a hard time translating:
“hurried on”,
“started to her feet”, “Down, down, down.”, “nice grand words” or “it’ll
never
do to ask”.
