INTRODUCTION
In this work we are going to take a
look at the character of Hermia in Midsummer
Night’s Dream, one of the best-known comedies written by W. Shakespeare.
First of all I decided to
choose Midsummer Night’s Dream
because I knew more or less the story and I was interested in it. The following
step was to choose the character that was going to be analysed, in this case,
as I have said before, it is Hermia. One of the
reasons why I have chosen this character is because I wanted to analyse one of
the main female characters. Moreover, I was interested in seeing the relation
of this character with the other lovers. Now, we are going to see a brief
introduction about this play.
William Shakespeare
(1564-1616) is considered one of the best writers of literature; he is a
universal genius because of the motifs he deals with, the language he uses and
so on. Shakespeare’s plays were developed during the Elizabethan period, so
some of the characteristics of that time can be seen in his works. There are
some experts who think that it is the best romantic comedy written by him. This
type of comedies is characterized by couples moved by love to achieve marriage
after overcoming several obstacles. As R. A. Foakes
says “Midsummer Night’s Dream is
described as a happy comedy, a festive work possibly written for a wedding
celebration and related to pastoral tradition. Therefore, this
play deals with fantasy an imagination together with reality”.
