MURIEL
SPARK
Writer, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. Educated in Edinburgh, she
became editor of Poetry Review (1947–9), and published poetry, short
stories, and critical biographies, including works on Wordsworth, Mary Shelley,
and Emily Brontë. She is best known for her novels, notably Memento Mori
(1959), The Ballad of Peckham Rye (1960), and especially The Prime of
Miss Jean Brodie (1961, filmed 1969). Other books include The Mandelbaum
Gate (1965, James Tait Black), The Driver's Seat (1970, filmed
1974), A Far Cry from Kensington (1988), Reality and Dreams (1996),
and The Finishing School (2004), as well as her stories (collected in
1986) and The Young Man Who Discovered the Secret of Life and Other Stories
(1999). An autobiography, Curriculum Vitae, appeared in 1992. She lives
in Italy, and was made a dame in 1993.
