Bibliography

Novels by Frederick Forsyth
The Day of the Jackal (1971) was Frederick Forsyth's first novel. An assassin known as The Jackal is hired to kill Charles De Gaulle. We know he's going to fail, but the story is a great success despite this knowledge.

The Odessa File (1972) is a story about the hunt to bring a WW II war criminal to justice.

The Dogs of War (1974) tells about a plan to use a team of mercenaries to take over an African country run by a dictator. The ultimate goal: to exploit the country's natural resources.

The Devil’s Alternative (1979) is a cold war spy thriller. We are presented with a Russian leader and an American President trying to avoid WW III in the face of a crisis. I've read and reviewed this book, rating it four stars. ****

The Fourth Protocol (1984) tells the story of a Russian renegade secret service chief who sends an agent to Britain to assemble and detonate a nuclear bomb near an American base. The expectation is that this will swing the upcoming election in favor of the leftists.

The Negotiator (1989) is the story of a ploy to force the President of the USA to resign, or to otherwise prevent him from signing a treaty that would be unfortunate for the bad guys.

The Fist of God (1994) is set in the build-up to the first Gulf War, where a British SAS operative is sent to Kuwait and then Baghdad to discover the truth about Saddam Hussein's secret weapon, code-named "The Fist of God". I've read and reviewed this book, rating it four stars. ****

Icon (1996) is set in 1999, at which time Russian politics is in a crisis. A populist Russian politician looks like he will win the upcoming presidential election, but the British secret service has obtained proof that this man will be worse than Hitler was in Germany. The British and the Americans launch a covert operation to derail this man's election campaign. The story is very interesting, but too contrived for my taste, and I only give it three stars. ***

The Phantom of Manhattan (1999) is a very different book from Frederick Forsyth's usual thrillers. It is a sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera" and is set in New York in 1906. Unfortunately, the book seems to get equally bad reviews from Frederick Forsyth's thriller fans and from "Phantom of the Opera" phans.

Avenger (2003) tells about a Vietnam veteran who is hired to avenge the killing of a billionaire's grandson in war-torn ex-Yugoslavia. The story includes flashbacks to the hero being a "Tunnel Rat" in the Vietnam War. I've read this book and found the plot too contrived, but still a fairly good read. My rating: three stars. ***

The Afghan (2006) is the story of how the CIA, with the help of the British, attempt to infiltrate the Taliban in Afghanistan and thus foil a new terrorist attack on the West.
