TEMPORAL AND SPACIAL
REFERENCES
Temporal and spacial references in
the texts are not easy to determine because most of them doesn’t have any, or
at least just present one reference only. I will try to make it possible to
establish both reference in each of them, but I can anticipate, after reading
the texts that just temporal references will be much more satisfied.
MERPY’S
BAD MOOD
Spacial: I dare saying that the action
takes place firstly in the house, “whe
merpy woke up” “no hot water” “she spilled
the milk” “the dog ate her homework”..it
seems to be happen inside her house for the moment, but later on when “she sees
her friends saying good morning”, “they give her some flowers” the action is
likely to happen outside the house, in the garden probably. And I can also say
that she’s walking along the street away from her friends because at the end o
the story says: “and she come back to
them”.
Temporal: the time course seemed to be in
Spring, the only reference we have is “a
beautiful Spring day!” so we got two references: Spring season and the
action is just a long day lasting.
THE STORY OF JEREMY DRAGONFLY AND
SCHLOMO THE DOG!
Spacial: three
special references are in this story, one in a doctor’s consultory “he goes to the doctor for a prescription”,
later he appears in a shelter “he goes to
a shelter to find a new friend” and finally, in the street “so off they go upon their way”.
Temporal: no much time references, but I would say the action takes all day long.
MERPY AND THE MONSTERS!
Spacial: her
bedroom is clearly the space where the action happens in here, we have this
evidences: “she looks underneath”, “she turns
out the light” ,”go back to the
wardrobe”, “I have school in the morning”, “Come share my pillow”.
Temporal: night time obviously, “the night
stars” gives a clear evidence of the temporal references and we also can
make an approximation saying that it lasts an hour or two before going to bed.
JEREMY
DRAGONFLY
Spacial: it’s
quite difficult her to assigned space but it seems to happen in the street
while Jeremy is playing with his dog and having ideas of fun “He'd run around buzzing”,” wear
funny costumes in the middle of town”,” They'd visit the moon”, “have picnics
with aliens wearing pajamas”, “some cranky old boys told him he
had to stop all of his games”.
Temporal: a day long, it doesn’t say anything more about but the omission of time
utterances like “and the day before he went to…” makes us think on just a day,
an evening long action.
JEREMY
DRAGONFLY CATCHES THE ARTBUG
Spacial: no time
references in this story, it just said that he went to the doctor and he is
with his friends, not much.
Temporal:
according to all things that happen here
“He sneezed paintings and sculptures and musical scores”,” folks all
around him said give it a rest!”, “he attempted to stop, and he found it a
bore”,” he went to the doctor” up to here I would
say the action takes one day, then when it’s said “And soon all his friends caught
the bug too” it seems to have passed several days in which his friends got
the artbug.
MERPY
AND THE MOSNTERS GO SWIMMING
Spacial: they are
presumed to be outdoors “Merpy and her friends sat around one day It was hot outside”,and then they decide to go swimming in a pool to refresh so the space
change and now they remain in a swimming pool
“We don't have school, let's go swim in a pool”, “I'm scared of the
water”, “ The splash was so big it was like a typhoon”, later on the location of the boys change “And they went home, to sweet dreams of another fun day”.
Temporal: a day long too, “Till the sky turned to night” they seem to have spend the whole day in the swimming pool.
MERPY’S HALLOWEEN ADVENTURE
Spacial: the
actions occurs inside a house “Were in for the day Waiting for visitors”, ”they knocked on the door”. They are clearly inside a house waiting for someone to knock on the door
and have a big treat or trick.
Temporal: the key word Is Halloween day, so it’s a long day action.
THE
MONSTER HOLIDAY
Spacial: no
concrete space in her is noticed, they are celebrating a monster party and
dressing up with costumes, so I can dare saying that they are indoors.
Temporal: Christmas time is the only data we can consider as a time reference, it
can be considered also as an action lasting one day.
