Analysis
of the SPACE
In this
analysis I will show where actions take place in this hypertext. It will not be
easy because sometimes the main character is dreaming; so I will try to differentiate
between reality and dreams. Furthermore, exterior and interior spaces will be
analyzed, as well as public and private places in order to understand in a
better way the text.
The text is
divided in three parts. In the first one, File 1: A
Party in Woodside, the action takes place in a house in Woodside during a
party. Secondly, in File 2: The
blue notebook, it’s not easy to know the exact location, we just know that
actions take place in a restaurant in a hotel just off the highway that runs
down the East side of the South Bay during Tom’s birthday. And finally, File 3: Terminals; in this
part it’s supposed that the space where everything happens is the offices of a
company where the main character (Jenny) works.
The space
where the actions take place is changeable. There are exteriors and interiors,
but most of the actions take place in interior spaces (house, office and restaurant).
Of course the house is a private place, but the restaurant and the offices are
both public ones. Moreover, there are many narrative ellipses and in some parts
of the text it’s almost impossible to know where the action is taking place due
to the absence of references.
