2. The primary difficulty
that I found in “Man and Superman” was the ability to translate the very
specific and dated language (having been written in 1903), whilst trying to
make it as fitting as possible. Furthermore, word order proved to be an
extremely pensive topic with particular reference to the use of more than one
adjective and a noun, where in Spanish it is not as easy as all the adjectives
first and then the noun as commonly found in English, and the combination of
many of these phrases in one sentence confused matters further. It was somewhat
less troublesome translating the speech within the extract, as the language was
less complicated and easier to find alternatives to words within my own
knowledge if the exact translation was not known.
3. “Shakespeare’s Sonnets”
are a large collection of various poems written over a period of time, but
released all together in 1609, and hence obviously once again used very
specific and dated language wherein lay the main difficulty, as, it is
extremely easy to lose the meaning and moral of each sonnet if too literal a
translation is used, where the wrong word is chosen from a list of possible
translations, and this meaning is further lost if the wrong word order is
employed. In order to help avoid this, I was able to find a website where each
sonnet was translated into easier English, and further to this, another website
where certain specific language was explained, as detailed in the translation.
4. “Opened Ground” is a
collection of Seamus Heaney’s poems from 1966-1996
and therefore displays a vast range of language and topics; however I focused
on poems from the first chapter of this book, entitled “Death of a Naturalist.”
The language was less dated, though still very specific to the topics of death
and nature as outlined in the title. The main problem here was choosing the
correct translation from the possibilities and if not, finding alternatives in
English to these words and then attempting to translate them. In order to help
choose the correct translation, I took to translating the chosen word back into
English as if I had come across it for the first time, and then saw whether
they had the appropriate meaning.
